D3 Weekly — May 31 to Jun 07, 2026

The design and AI communities converged on a single uncomfortable truth this week: the interface is no longer the product, and the human is no longer the user. From the grief of displacement to the quiet radicalism of inconvenience, the conversation shifted from what can this do to who does this serve.

This Week’s Focus

The most honest piece published this week was Jack Maguire’s meditation on AI job grief. It names what most of us are feeling but cannot articulate: that the institutions driving displacement have no language for the emotional wreckage they leave behind. This is not resistance to progress. It is the normal human response to losing the work that defined you.

Two other pieces orbit this same gravity well. Soleio’s talk on the geometry of luck reframes career serendipity as something you can design for, not just wait for. And the essay on frictionmaxxing argues that our obsession with seamlessness is making us worse at the kind of creative work that requires resistance. Taken together, these three pieces form a coherent argument: the future belongs to those who can hold grief and agency in the same hand.

Artificial general intelligence does not hold out the promise of truly post-human bureaucracy. A necessary corrective to the hype.

Looking Ahead

The frictionmaxxing essay and Soleio’s geometry of luck both point to the same conclusion: the designers who will thrive are not the ones who adopt every tool fastest. They are the ones who maintain the ability to choose when to resist. Next week, watch for more concrete examples of teams building with deliberate constraints rather than chasing maximum throughput.
